Title Charissa's Journey

Since You Gave Me A Dry Field

I have, in the past, admired Caleb's daughter because not only did she ask him for a field, but she had the nerve to go back and ask him for springs of water, as well. This morning I saw something else.

The field Caleb gave his daughter was in the south. Apparently it was dry there. I can make a pretty good guess as to what any one of us would have done in her place. We would have cried, we would have wept, we would have sat in dust and ashes, we would have complained that God had given us a dry field, we would have asked Him for a different one.

Not this gal.

No, she said, Since you’ve given me a field in the south, where it’s dry, give me a spring of water, too. She struck a chord. It was the logical thing to ask for, and since he could see that the value of a dry field was dependent on its water supply, Caleb gave her two springs, the upper and the lower.

This is what you need to get: that’s not just a story about what one man gave to his one daughter. That is the story of what our Father will give to any one of us who asks. He loves us. He wants the absolute best for us. And in spite of what you may have heard from any super-religious people in your past or your present, not enough and even just barely enough is not the absolute best that He has in mind.

That having been said, however, understand that He isn’t the slightest bit opposed to giving any one of us a dry field. He may give us a good-paying job in an area where the best preacher reads his sermons from a children’s Bible-story book. He may move us to a place where we can’t seem to make any friends. He may set us in a situation where we barely have enough money. The possible “dry field” opportunities abound.

Do we settle down and become okay with the desert? Do we make up our minds to become content with the emptiness we feel inside? Do we spend the rest of our lives whining and complaining to God and whoever else we can find who will listen?

No!

We go to Him and we say, “Since You’ve given me a dry field, give me springs of water, too.”

He won’t say, "Just be happy with what you’ve got." That isn’t His character. In whatever your dry place is, when you ask Him for springs, He will do what Caleb did: He will give you the upper springs and the lower springs. He will give you water in your desert, both from above and from beneath.

The dry place in which He put you was no mistakeno accident. He put you there on purpose, because He wants you to ask Him for a spring.

When you ask, He will give.
